A free one-hour eye test

An unhurried hour to test your sight and check the health of your eyes. It’s free, by appointment.

Our eye test is not a quick formality: we measure each eye separately and compare the results with how you see now.

What we measure

A good eye test combines objective tests, where the equipment does the measuring, and subjective tests, where you tell us what you see. Using state-of-the-art equipment, we measure:

  • your prescription, one eye at a time: the sphere (short- or long-sightedness), the cylinder and its axis (astigmatism) and, if needed, the prism;
  • the addition, the extra power for seeing up close once your near vision starts to fade with age (presbyopia);
  • the distance between your pupils, so that the lenses are properly centred;
  • your habitual visual acuity: how well you see today with your usual glasses or contact lenses.

With all of that, we decide together whether you really need to change anything. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you: that way we can compare your current prescription with the new one.

In the subjective part, you’ll hear the same question again and again: ‘Which is better, 1 or 2?’ Try it for yourself:

Which is better, 1… or 2?

Round 1 of 4

Hover over 1 and 2 (or press and hold on a phone) to compare them, then pick the one that looks sharper. With a keyboard, press Tab to move between them and Enter to pick one.

Your eye health

Sometimes new glasses alone can’t make your sight better. That’s why, as well as your prescription, we check the health of your eyes during the test.

An optician doesn’t diagnose diseases or prescribe treatment, but has a good chance of spotting the best-known ones early:

  • cataracts;
  • glaucoma;
  • infections of various kinds;
  • retinal and macular degeneration, including the changes to the retina that diabetes can cause;
  • retinal detachment.

If we see something a doctor should look at, we’ll explain it to you calmly and refer you to an ophthalmologist. In Spain, this isn’t just something we’re allowed to do: it’s our duty.

So if you notice something odd about your eyes and don’t know where to turn, start with your optician.

Your prescription glasses

With your prescription in hand, it’s time to choose your glasses: the frame, the lenses and, if you need them, varifocals. We tell you all about it in Prescription glasses. And if you’d also like to see sharply in the sun, have a look at our prescription sunglasses.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have my eyes tested?

It depends on your age and your eyes. As a general rule, an adult with no sight problems can have an eye test every two years. From 60 onwards, once a year is better, because the risk of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration goes up.

If you have diabetes, an eye condition or a family history of eye disease, it’s worth coming more often. Children need check-ups from an early age: at around three, before they start school and then as often as we recommend. And if your sight changes suddenly or an eye hurts, don’t wait for your next check-up: call us straight away.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

It’s free, and we set aside an hour for you. At the end we explain what we’ve found, with no obligation: if you don’t need to change anything, we’ll tell you.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, so that we can give you the full hour. Book with the appointment form or call us on +34 952 528 395, and we’ll confirm the day and time.

Can I use my glasses prescription to order contact lenses?

Not as it stands: the prescription changes for contact lenses, and the stronger it is, the more it changes. We also need to measure the shape of your cornea. We explain it all on our contact lenses page.

Which languages do you do the eye test in?

English, Spanish, German and Danish. Just choose your language on the appointment form, and that’s the one we’ll use with you.
